Two companies that have spent years trying to block each other just signed a deal that would have seemed impossible not long ago. On October 5, Huawei and Qualcomm announced a broad, multi year patent licensing agreement covering AI, 5G, computing, and networking technology.
For the first time, Qualcomm agreed to pay Huawei to license patents, including ones behind Huawei’s LogicFolding chipmaking technique. It is also Huawei’s first 5G licensing deal with Qualcomm.
Huawei says the agreement will push the total value of its patent licensing deals past 6.9 billion dollars once it closes. The deal still needs regulatory approval, and neither side has shared the actual price tag yet.
What makes this interesting is not just the money, it is who is paying who. Qualcomm has spent years mostly on the receiving end of licensing fees from other companies.
Now it is handing some of that money to a Chinese rival it has clashed with for over a decade, because that rival built chip technology worth paying for. That is a quiet admission that good ideas in AI hardware are not flowing in one direction anymore.
They are showing up everywhere, and even companies with every incentive to keep fighting are finding it cheaper to license than to stay in court. I like seeing competitors trade patents instead of lawsuits.
It usually means the technology underneath is maturing, and that the people building it are starting to agree on what is actually worth paying for. When rivals start paying each other instead of suing each other, the whole industry tends to move a little faster.
It also means smaller companies building on either side of this fight get a bit more certainty about which patents are safe to build on, and that kind of clarity is worth more than people give it credit for.
