OpenAI Just Told Everyone the IPO Can Wait Until 2027

Sam Altman told Fortune magazine straight up: OpenAI is not going public this year.

He said doing an IPO right now would be, in his words, ill-timed. Too much safety work still on the table. The new target is 2027, maybe sooner if the business keeps growing the way it has been.

This is not Altman panicking under pressure. His own CFO, Sarah Friar, has been telling employees the same thing for weeks. She called the IPO a milestone, not a finish line, just another fundraising step in a longer story.

What makes this land differently is the timing. Altman just publicly agreed with Anthropic’s Dario Amodei that the whole industry needs to pace itself. Amodei wrote an essay asking labs to slow the pace of new capability jumps and bring in outside experts to check the work. Altman responded that he agrees, and said OpenAI would open its systems to outside evaluators too.

So pushing the IPO back is not just a scheduling choice. It looks like a company trying to prove it actually means what it just said about slowing down.

That is the part I keep coming back to. A company sitting on the largest private funding round in history, chasing a trillion dollar valuation, chose to wait anyway. Wall Street would take this listing today if OpenAI offered it. OpenAI said not yet.

Maybe that is the real signal here. When the money is sitting right there and you still choose patience, that says something about where the company’s head actually is.

I like it when a company slows down on purpose instead of being forced to. It usually means they are thinking past the next quarter.
