China’s New Chip Star Triples in Its First Trading Day

A Chinese chipmaker most people outside the industry have never heard of just had one of the wildest debuts a stock market has seen all year.

Enflame, backed by Tencent, listed on Shanghai’s STAR Market and opened up 188 percent on day one. At one point the stock valued the company at roughly 185 billion yuan, about 27.6 billion dollars, nearly triple what it was worth going into the IPO. Retail investors bid for the shares more than 4,000 times over, which is the kind of number that usually only happens once or twice a year anywhere in the world.

Enflame makes AI training and inference chips, and it is being called China’s answer to Nvidia. The company is not profitable yet. Revenue hit about 147 million dollars last year, up from 103 million the year before. That gap between the hype and the balance sheet is exactly what makes this interesting.

This is not really about one company though. It is about what happens when a government decides chip independence is not optional. Beijing has been pushing hard to wean its AI industry off Nvidia and other US suppliers, and investors are betting big that this is the direction the whole market goes. Enflame is one of what people in the industry call China’s four little dragons of AI chips, and it is the last of them to go public.

Whether the stock holds this valuation in six months is anyone’s guess. IPO pops like this one usually cool off once the excitement fades. But the money pouring in says something real about how fast China wants to build its own AI stack from the ground up, chips included, with or without Nvidia in the room.
