Nvidia might be about to buy the place where half the open-source AI world lives.
According to reporting from The Information, picked up fast by CNBC, Bloomberg, and Fortune, Nvidia has agreed to pay about 12.9 billion dollars for Hugging Face, the site where more than 15,000 companies and thousands of independent researchers share and download AI models. Neither company has confirmed it publicly. Sources describe a deal that is close but not signed, and multiple outlets note it could still fall apart.
If it goes through, it would be the biggest purchase Nvidia has ever made, bigger than the 6.9 billion it paid for Mellanox back in 2020.
What keeps nagging at me is this. Hugging Face became the default home for open weights because it stayed neutral. Meta’s Llama family lives there. Mistral’s models live there. So does almost everything DeepSeek and the other Chinese labs release. A huge chunk of the open AI ecosystem runs through one repository that, until now, answered to nobody selling chips.
Nvidia already sits underneath almost every model on that platform, since most of them get trained and run on its hardware anyway. Owning the front door too gives it a view into what people are building before anyone else gets it, plus a natural place to point developers toward Nvidia’s own tools.
I do not think this kills open source AI. Hugging Face’s whole value is staying open, and Nvidia has more reason than most to keep it that way. But it is worth sitting with the fact that one company now touches the chips, a growing slice of the cloud financing, and possibly the library everyone downloads from. That is a lot of the stack for one name.
