An AI That Hacks Companies On Purpose Just Raised $250M

There’s a company that raised $250 million this week for building an AI whose entire job is to break into your company on purpose.

Horizon3 makes NodeZero, a platform that acts like a hacker inside your own network. It chains together weak passwords, missed patches, and identity gaps into the same kind of attack path a real intruder would use to get from the front door to the crown jewels. Then it hands you a fix list and reruns the whole test to check the hole actually got closed, not just patched on paper.

The Series E puts the company’s valuation above $2 billion, roughly triple what it was worth in its last round about a year ago. The money is going toward sales and support teams across the US, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, plus new offices opening in Singapore and Australia.

The timing tracks with what’s actually happening out there. Attackers are already using AI to scan for weak points quicker and cheaper than any human red team could manage on a Tuesday afternoon. If the people trying to break in are automating the search, the people defending have to automate the search too, or the whole fight tips in one direction.

What I like about this one is that it isn’t another chatbot wrapped around an old product. It’s AI pointed at a genuinely unglamorous, necessary job: testing your own systems before somebody else does it without asking permission first.

Cybersecurity used to be mostly a human game of cleaning up after the fact, patching the hole once someone already walked through it. Money like this is a sign that both sides of that fight are turning into machine against machine, with people mostly there to read the reports and sign off on the fix.
