The US government just stood up a brand new task force for AI, and it is bigger than most people realize. On October 4, President Trump announced the Super Intelligence Force, led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, with the FTC chair, a top Pentagon technology official, and the head of the Office of Personnel Management serving as vice chairs.
It reports straight to the White House chief of staff. This follows an executive order from late September that told federal agencies to swap out the words artificial intelligence and AI for super intelligence and SI in their official communications.
Yes, really. The paperwork got a rebrand before the policy even caught up.
The task force itself has a real job though. It is supposed to report back within 120 days on the risks and opportunities AI poses, and it is meant to coordinate how the government talks to tech companies, infrastructure providers, and the public about where this is heading.
Governments move slow, AI moves fast, and right now Washington is trying to build the plumbing to keep up. A task force with real names and a 120 day deadline is a lot more concrete than another hearing where nobody agrees on anything.
Will a new name and a new org chart actually change how AI gets built or regulated? Probably not by itself.
But putting intelligence, defense, and consumer protection people at the same table is the kind of structural move that usually matters more later than it looks right now. I would rather see a government paying close attention late than one not paying attention at all.
The next 120 days will tell us whether this turns into actual policy or just a new name on the door. Either way, it is worth watching who shows up at that table and what they decide to do with the time they just gave themselves.
