xAI shipped a new version of its image tool, Grok Imagine Image 2.0, putting it on grok.com, the iOS app, and the Android app all at once. It became the default Quality Mode on August 7, no beta wall, no waitlist.
The headline feature is precision. There is a region tool, point at a spot in the picture and only that spot changes, plus segmentation for selecting exact areas and clean background removal that keeps the rest of the image untouched. You can also feed it up to five reference images in one generation, so it can pull details from several sources into a single composite without you stitching anything together by hand.
On the independent leaderboards, Grok Imagine Image 2.0 landed at number two in the world for both text to image generation and image editing, right behind OpenAI’s gpt image 2. Six weeks ago that spot did not exist for xAI at all. That is not a small jump for six weeks of work.
What strikes me about this one is the editing tools, not just the ranking. Most image models are still clumsy about changing one small thing without wrecking the rest of the picture. A tool that lets you point at exactly the part you want to fix and leaves everything else alone is closer to how people actually want to use these things, small corrections, not full regenerations every time.
An API is coming, just no date yet. Until then this lives inside the app and the web tool, which is honestly where most people will use it anyway. xAI keeps shipping fast, and every few weeks the distance to the frontier labs on image quality gets a little shorter.
