Claude Fable 5, Anthropic’s newest and most capable model, is no longer free on your subscription today. Starting June 23rd, if you want to use it on Claude Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise, you pay extra. The cost: $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.
That is double what you pay for Opus 4.8, and it hits at a moment when companies are feeling the weight of their AI spending. Some teams cut Claude licenses over budget pressure. Others tokenmaxxed themselves right out of runway.
Here is what happened: Fable 5 launched June 9th. Export controls came June 12th. Access was limited to 13 days on subscription plans. Now the 13 days are up, and the pricing changes.
Anthropic says it will bring Fable 5 back to standard plans when capacity allows. That means demand is higher than supply. That means the models that move the needle are the ones you pay surge pricing for, and everyone else waits or picks something cheaper.
The AI cost story just shifted again. It used to be about volume discounts and cheap tokens. Now it is about capacity constraints and which model to afford.
