University of Toronto Just Proved AI Can Build Adaptive Worms

Researchers at the University of Toronto published a proof-of-concept on June 2 that should wake up every security team in the world: an AI-powered computer worm that reasons about its targets and adapts its attack strategy as it spreads.

Not following a script. Reasoning. Learning. Self-replicating.

In lab tests, the worm achieved a 73.8% exploitation rate across a 33-machine network in seven days. It used an open-weight language model-nothing proprietary, nothing expensive, nothing hard to replicate.

The threat model just shifted. Patching a vulnerability used to stop a worm. This worm patches around the patch. It detects what runs on each machine and adapts its payload. It’s the first public proof that large language models can power self-reasoning, self-propagating malware.

The authors responsibly withheld operational details. But the capability is clear: this is coming, and security teams need to build defenses now.
