The US Just Pulled Anthropic’s Best Models Off the Global Market

Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 on June 9 — its most powerful model ever made available to the public. Ten days later, it was gone.

On June 12, the US government issued an export control directive ordering Anthropic to cut off access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for every foreign national, anywhere on earth. Not just abroad — inside the US too. Anthropic had to pull both models from every plan that same evening.

The trigger was tied to SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest carrier and an Anthropic investor, which the White House flagged as a Chinese security risk with access to Mythos 5. Amazon researchers then separately flagged Fable 5 vulnerabilities, and the directive escalated from revoking one company’s access to shutting the whole thing down globally.

The fallout is real. Customers who paid for Fable 5 credits between June 9 and June 14 have until tomorrow, June 20, to claim refunds. Anthropic’s top engineers flew to Washington to negotiate. The company’s managing director of international affairs, speaking at a Seoul office opening this week, said he was very confident both models would return in the coming days.

What happened here is the frontier capability conversation running directly into national security. The models that perform best — the ones that can find zero-day exploits and reason across scientific domains — are exactly the ones that make governments nervous.

Anthropic built for safety from the start. That probably helped them here. Getting pulled out of global markets is not what anyone wanted, but they’re still at the table working this out.

Models this capable were always going to get a harder look. We’re watching what that looks like in real time.
